Precious moments

There are specific times in your life, moments when you face inevitability. You know that, after this moment in time – be it today or next week – nothing will ever be the same. When you know it’s coming, you can feel it looming overhead, getting closer every minute as you desperately grasp at the last memories you have of your life before – or, perhaps, willing every second to go by just a little bit faster in order to reach the other side.

When it comes down to it, every moment is unique – nothing can be recreated exactly. But it’s those times when life is stretching out before you, about to change for better or worse, when you just know: What has been will never be again. And not in an end-of-the-world-movie kind of way. In a normal, everyday, sometimes-even-unremarkable-occurrence kind of way.

It’s these times, these moments, that are the most precious of all. Often you don’t even realize you’d passed them by – weeks, months, lifetimes later you look back and see that you didn’t even see the change. But sometimes, these precious moments stop time, even stop you in your tracks. In a society that is increasingly consumed with itself, obsessed with the betterment of one’s self and one’s status, these moments become more and more important. The more we forget to cherish every one, the less we grasp onto what life really is, what it’s really about.

It’s the time you step onto a plane to come home from a semester abroad, knowing that even if you go back, it’ll never quite be the same. It’s moving out of your parents’ home for the last time, knowing that the next time you’re there, you’ll just be visiting. It’s the last long family Christmas you get to enjoy before starting a career you know will inevitably eat up your holidays for the next 5 to 10 years. It’s the childhood you never quite got the chance to appreciate enough.

Every life, even the ones that end too early, is filled with billions and billions of little moments, minor occurrences. Perhaps that’s the real challenge we face – a challenge to take moment number 10,400,394 and consider it just as carefully as we did the last.  You might just end up being glad you did.

Ain’t nothin but wordssss

#1 on my list of things people should learn how to do:

Communicate.

In literally every aspect of life, communication would make everything a whole lot easier.  War, sex, drugs (okay, maybe not drugs actually)..inter-personal relationships in general, though, could use a new definition of the word communicating.  I mean, open communication doesn’t actually exist.  Ever.  No matter how much you can say, ‘I could tell that person anything!’ you never actually do.  There’s always something with everyone that just isn’t ever said.  And in most cases, that something is a whole lot bigger than ‘I don’t like those shoes you’re wearing.’

Maybe this isn’t the worst thing.  Maybe I don’t want to know that my best friend doesn’t agree with everything I do or say.  But when you don’t say one thing, that one thing can quickly become a big thing, or a lot of things.  And call me crazy, but no matter how much I don’t like criticism, I don’t like the aftermath of the many things that haven’t been said a lot more.

Like many things in life, I’m probably never going to have a solution for this.  I’m also probably never going to stop not telling everyone everything.  But maybe if we all just got a little better at saying what was on our minds and dealing with it before it became an issue, the world could get just a little better, a step at a time.  ((Ignore how cheesy it is to end this post here.))
